Self-isolating over the school holidays? Here’s your family’s survival guide.

With one week left of school holidays and hopefully a lift of some social- distancing restrictions we need to continue to keep your children entertained from home for now.

Here is Mi Casa to the rescue, with great ideas for what you can do as parents, to help your family thrive during this challenging time.

  1. Find a pen pal.

Having a friend to mail letters to is a fun way to meet new people, while also promoting many key skills. https://apenpals.com/friends-online/australia/city/western_australia/1/ is a great website that connects you to a pen pal within WA. Having a pen pal also gives those that don’t have the option of using social media or live with family members to stay connected. For our elderly, receiving a letter in the mail could be the difference that keeps them sane during this lonely time.

  1. Easter may be over, but we can still stretch out the fun, why not create an Easter egg hunt throughout your house and garden?

Hide Easter eggs (if you have any left) all throughout your house and watch as your kids run around with madness trying to collect all the eggs before their siblings.

  1. Make art and craft.

Do some colouring in, paint on canvases or make a loo roll bird feeder. Making a toilet roll feeder is fun and messy, the kids will love it! And it will help them learn about the birds in your neighbourhood too.

All you need to do is:

  • Smother a cardboard toilet roll with peanut butter
  • Roll it in bird seeds and thread some string through the hole
  • Tie it up in your garden
  • Keep a running log of the birds you see

  1. Have a picnic in your garden.

Kids will get bored of sitting at the same table every day for meals. So, make things exciting, by packing up your lunch and taking it outdoors. It’s also a great way of getting fresh air. If you don’t have a garden have it in the living room floor instead. It will feel like an adventure for the kids.

  1. Get into the ANZAC spirit by creating some beautiful artwork.

Whether it be a wreath, candle holder or some poppies, there is so much you can do to acknowledge and thank all those who have done their part to keep us safe.

  1. And of course, there’s nothing more fun than a good old-fashioned family board game.

Weather it’s go fish, Jenga or monopoly there are some classics all the family will love playing. Here are our favourites:

  • Go Fish
  • Snap
  • Battleships
  • Twister
  • Jenga
  • Uno
  • Monopoly
  • Guess who

And if you have none of these, you can make your own games! Some classics we love include:

  • Noughts and crosses
  • Hangman
  • Hide and seek
  • 44 homes
